Ted Brewer Violins

Ted Brewer built his first violin in 1993. Since then, he's refined and further developed his instruments, improving design aesthetics while pushing the envelope with the integration of technology into his instruments.

Design
With its dynamic shape, clear polymer construction, the Vivo² clearly grew out of the design aesthetic that informs Ted's hand-made custom instruments. Highlighted by the swooping curves and sharp edges of the lower bout, the shape of this instrument is bold, striking, and modern.

Ergonomics
Despite its edgy design, the Vivo² feels very much like a regular acoustic violin. Like most solid-body instruments, it's a bit heavier, but the majority of the weight is balanced over the shoulder. Grover machine tuners do add some weight away from the body, so it can start to feel a bit heavy after long playing.

Colors
The Vivo line is available in a completely transparent polymer (looks like the violin is made of ice!), as well as clear polymer tinted purple or blue, with sparkles of metallic. Recent additions include the Vivo Ice, a frosted pink version.

Tone
The Vivo²'s tone is largely shaped by the modeling software of the built-in preamp. As such, it has a slightly more processed, synthesizer-like tone than some other models. Volume and tone controls on the instrument allow you to shape its sound somewhat. The Vivo² is not as naturally acoustic-sounding as some of the other solid-body electrics in our lineup. It's a great choice for techno, industrial, rock, or jazz.

5-Strings
Ted introduced the Vivo5 in March of 2007 (the first two instruments made were shipped directly to us at the Detroit ASTA show). He's done an excellent job of making his 5-string playable, with a slightly wider neck and excellent string spacing at the nut -- it's almost as easy to play as his 4-string!

Technical Highlights, Versatility, and Compatibility

  • Built-in LEDs!! -- sound to light function, so lights respond to your playing.
  • On-board preamp with preprogrammed modeling software.
  • Familiar shape with the same reference points as an acoustic violin ('though the "upper bout" indicator is quite small) makes the transition from acoustic to electric comfortable.
  • Design of lower bout is not merely aesthetic -- it takes most regular shoulder rests, and holds them quite securely!
  • Suitable for most styles of popular music and jazz -- great for techno, industrial, gothic, and rock styles.
  • Sounds good with many amplifiers -- as always, it's best to consult with us to find the perfect match for your playing style.
