Bose L1® Model II
For amplifying bowed strings, line array systems offer the best sound reproduction, without the hollow, booming sound and feedback issues that often plague violin family instruments (when they're lucky enough to be heard at all!) when played through traditional PA systems.
Bose L1® Line Array Systems
The engineers at Bose® have done an amazing thing with this system -- they've created a lightweight personal PA system that carries your sound from behind the players to the back of the house. It's especially wonderful for violin family instruments, as it seems almost completely feedback-proof, and there's absolutely no distortion when playing double-stops!
The Bose L1® eliminates the need for wedge monitors, and gives you the peace of mind that comes from knowing that what you hear, on the stage, is exactly what the audience is hearing, all the way to the back row.
The newest arrival to the Bose L1® family is the Bose L1® Compact System. It's smaller that the L1 Model 1 or the Model 2, and even more portable. The L1 Compact line array speaker system delivers Bose quality sound in a smaller, more affordable package.
Fishman SoloAmp
Fishman SoloAmp
Newer to the line array market, and with a more specific application, is the Fishman SoloAmp. It lacks some of the magic of the Bose® L1® systems, in that it does lose volume as you get farther from the SoloAmp.
However, for a singer-songwriter playing small to medium-sized venues, the SoloAmp offers excellent power, amazing clarity, and portability -- at a very attractive price.
A small Celtic, bluegrass or country band could probably use two of these for performing in the average club, without the need for a separate PA.
Yamaha StagePas 300
Yamaha has long been a market leader in portable PA systems. For educators and performers who are more comfortable with a traditional PA system, or working with a tighter budget than a line array system will allow, Yamaha's StagePas 300 and StagePas 500 offer a great lightweight, portable, and affordable solution for small to medium-sized venues.
