Preamps

A preamplifier takes the line level signal from your instrument and increases its electrical strength. It can also sweeten your tone (if desired) by applying EQ (equalization) to it. This can be as simple as treble and bass tone controls, or as complex as a multi band parametric equalizer.

A preamp is highly recommended if you have put a piezo pickup on your acoustic instrument. By nature, the crystal structure of the piezo gives a brittle tone. Using a preamp allows you to warm up your sound. Some simply mount to your belt with a clip, others are boxes that can be put on top of your amp or on the floor.

If you've got a solid-body electric violin, and you're unhappy with its amplified tone, the right preamp can sometimes make a world of difference. Call us for a recommendation -- we can often greatly improve your sound, just by pairing up the right preamp with your instrument!

Under $100
The Tube MP, from Applied Research and Technology, may well be the best $50 you'll ever spend. If you play a Fender electric violin, or any of the solid-body instruments (most shaped like a violin's f-hole) built in the same factory, the Tube MP will fatten up the thin, brittle sound of the pickup and greatly increase the somewhat-weak output signal, giving you a richer, fuller tone than you thought the instrument was capable of.
