The 4-string acoustic-electric Strata Glow violin is a 3D-printed instrument with incorporated, programmable LEDs. The instrument is unique in its modularity, allowing individual parts to be easily replaced, customized, or upgraded by OpenFab.

Strata Glow includes some very fancy lighting features, but first and foremost, you want a violin that sounds good, and Strata does just that! This Strata is equipped with an LR Baggs VIO NT embedded-piezo bridge, which is a preferred pickup for acoustic-electric violinists seeking a natural tone. The Strata's materials and the innovative 3D printed body design give the instrument great response and an even tone across all frequencies.

LED Operation Basics

To turn on the LED system, simply plug in the power bank to the controller. Press the on/off button on the battery pack if needed. The lights will start with a default orange.

The controller has a single button. It is programmed to recognize single clicks, double clicks, and long presses.

  • Single Click – increment preset (go forward a preset)
  • Double Click – decrement preset (go back a preset)
  • Long Press – decrease brightness

Controls and presets are handled by WLED, a free open-source lighting software interface. WLED enables you to generate your own lighting effects and color combinations (tutorials are available on the WLED site or YouTube). For ease of use out of the box, 14 default presets come pre-loaded.

Presets can be 100% configured by the player, which is done best over wifi connection with a laptop.

About OpenFab

OpenFab PDX, LLC is a digital design and manufacturing consulting firm based in Portland, OR, and owned and operated by mechanical engineer, David Perry.

David brings his ingenuity and technical prowess to his violin designs and an innovative use of 3D printing materials. OpenFab fiddles are modular, making them customizable and replaceable on a per-part basis. After 3D printing, the parts undergo a secondary process to add stiffness, durability, and resistance to high temperatures. Violin bodies are made from a carbon fiber reinforced biopolymer and none of the printed plastics are derived from petroleum sources.
