Outlaw Fiddle is the creation of Geoffrey Fitzhugh Perry, or "Fitz" for short, who is a lifelong musician and a very seasoned professional multi-style violinist. His goal was a better way to amplify a bowed string instrument and, having found one, he received his first US Patent in 2024 on a double magnetic pickup system for electric violin!
The EV3 from Outlaw Fiddle features a patented dual magnetic pickup system with ergonomically placed 4-way pickup selector feature, a unique thumb-controlled Master Volume placement next to the neck makes for quick and musical gain changes, and an awesome look, while retaining familiar dimensions and touch-points make the player feel at home right away.
Body Design
All the familiar touch points and dimensions are there from a traditional and typical acoustic violin. The neck area is the same length, as well as the body length from end button to nut, and the string scale length is the same too. The right upper bout is slightly reduced, but still there--a logical compromise as the upper right bout of a traditional acoustic that is actually “in the way” of comfortably playing in the upper positions anyway.
Completing the look are a white pearlescent rosin guard, like the pick guards found on electric guitars, and a custom carbon fiber tailpiece.
The EV3 comes fitted with a Guarneri-style chin rest but accommodates other center mounted chin rests. The lower bout also accommodates most standard 4/4 violin shoulder rests.
Pickups
Outlaw Fiddle's patented dual magnetic pickup system features one pickup voiced to be more open and clear, and a second to be a bit louder and more rounded sounding. These pickups use magnetic coils, which sense the violin vibration in a magnetic field, lending the tone an airy quality, similar to electric guitar pickups and quite different from the pressurized tone of typical piezo pickups.
The 4-way selector switch toggles (1) warm pickup only (similar to a guitar neck pickup); (2) Combined pickup sounds; (3) lead pickup only; (4) summed combination of both pickups in series wiring. These options can be used to great musical effect, going from clear bell-like tones to pushing an amp into overdrive for a solo, all right on the instrument.
Another benefit of this pickup design is that there is no requirement that the strings be metal, as they are not what interacts with the pickup. Therefore, use any strings you like!
Electronics
The EV3 is completely passive, using no batteries. It uses a simple two-pickup design with a single master volume and master tone.
Unique thumb-controlled Master Volume placement next to the neck makes for quick and musical gain changes. An ergonomically placed 4-way pickup selector switches between pickups or pickup combinations.
Comes set up with Prim Electric Violin strings, Knilling Perfection Pegs geared ebony lookalike tuners, and includes an oblong carbon fiber patterned hard case.
